The sun is returning on the east coast and the bicycle racing season is just underway. This weekend, Sam Smith raced in the prestigious Tour of the Southern Highlands in Northern Georgia. Friday's racing included a 17 km individual time trial (an individual effort against the clock) and a criterium race(a 0.6 mile, four corner race for 30 minutes). Racing in the 17-18 year old division, Sam finished 21st in both stages among the 75 participants. On Saturday, Sam finished 30th in the 32 mile Circuit Race over rolling hills on a four mile loop. But what Sam was waiting for was Sunday's 75 mile Road Race on a fifteen mile looped course that included about 7,000 feet of climbing. Road racing is Sam's comfort zone and he finished 7th just one minute behind the leader. One major disadvantage Sam experienced this weekend was that he was far away from home, without teammates and racing against competition from the south and west that have been racing through the winter.
